The objective is to provide durable reusable pads, teach the girls how to use and make the reusable pads themselves and also avail menstrual management and reproductive health education.
The project which is carried out in partnership with Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise targets to reach out to 2500 vulnerable girls in the slum areas of Kawempe in Kampala district and rural areas of Luweero district in four months. The DG first visited a group of young mothers under the Rotary empowerment that are making the pads and with delight promised to give the Young mothers 1 million shillings for the job well-done
In his welcoming remarks, the head teacher of wonder world primary school, said very many girls go through hard time staying at school during their menstrual periods and told the DG, that as you have seen state of living in our community, very many families may not afford to buy pads for their little girls, which forces very many girls to use unhealthy materials like pieces of old used clothes hence affecting their reproductive health, very many choose not to come for school which also affects their class performance and at worst some sleep around with men for support hence getting pregnant at an early and dropping out of school. He added that it was great because the pads were durable and could be used for over 2 years.
The Local chairman 1 of Katoogo Zone thanked Rotary for considering their community, saying that as leaders sometimes they feel helpless, but with this large number of girls that have been helped they feel a big impact in their community.
The DG said in his speech said that he was excited and joyful for the warm welcome and that he was so happy to visit the community because he has always received reports and seen photos of Rotary in this community, so he really wanted to come down to participate in service in this community.
