A Gift of Eyeglasses
Presentation of Gift of Eye Glasses
As a former member of a Lions Club, it was natural for Roger to take a keen interest in helping to provide the gift of sight to as many people as possible. For a number of years, he had been collecting and donating good used prescription glasses to be refurbished and used.
In 2022, a large gift of non-prescription reading glasses was received from Fondation Coup de Coeur in Montreal. These glasses along with used glasses were distributed by the Rotary Clubs of Kampala Kawempe, Arua Eco City and newly formed Koboko for the Rotarians to oversee their donation to charity organizations and refugees.
The following letter from Rotarian Faith Inocensia, Arua Eco City, explains the distribution process.
“On behalf of the Rotary club of Arua Eco City, I would like to send my sincere gratitude to the Rotary club of Cornwall Sunrise for the tremendous job you are doing to see that everyone in this world lives a good life. Through Rotarian Roger Lee, Rotarian Faith Inocensia of Arua Eco City, received five hundred and fourteen pairs of eyeglasses. Among them were 74 new pairs and the rest were used but in good condition. We, as the Rotary group, gave out 140 pairs of used eye glasses to a charity organization called Umoja Helping Hearts Uganda based in Wakiso district.
We also gave 160 used glasses and 74 new pairs of eyeglasses to the Danish Refugee Council, an organization serving the refugees living in Rhino refugee resettlement camp and Mvepi resettlement camp in West Nile region of Uganda. Because they are vulnerable groups we felt they really needed some of them. We, as the club of Arua Echo City, remained with 140 pairs of eyeglasses to be distributed to the community in Koboko together with the Rotary Club of Koboko which is going to be newly started on the 22nd of October 2022”.
